FCRA § 605B (15 USC § 1681c-2): Block of Information
CRAs must block reporting of information resulting from identity theft within 4 business days of receiving an identity theft report, copy of the report filed with a law enforcement agency, and identification of the blocked information.
FCRA § 611 (15 USC § 1681i): Reinvestigation
CRAs must conduct a reasonable investigation within 30 days of receiving a dispute. For identity theft, the CRA must also notify the furnisher that the information is disputed.
FCRA § 623(a)(6) (15 USC § 1681s-2): Furnisher Duties
When notified of identity theft, furnishers must not report the fraudulent information and must correct it with all CRAs to which they previously reported.
Fair Credit Billing Act (15 USC § 1666): Billing Errors
For credit card fraud, cardholders are not liable for more than $50 in unauthorized charges, and most card issuers waive even that amount.
