I've been trying to resolve this on my own but I'm stuck.

employer claiming my side project IP. I've been dealing with this for about 11 weeks now and the situation isn't improving.

This involves content I created over the past 18 months. I do have documentation proving my ownership and timeline.

Am I overthinking this or is this a real legal issue worth pursuing?

I had a similar issue and ended up consulting with an attorney. It was worth the $200-300 for the initial consultation just to understand my rights.

I've dealt with this before.

In my case, it took about 2-4 months to resolve. The key was hiring an attorney to send the initial letter.

I specialize in this area of law. Here's my take on the legal issues.

The legal framework here involves both federal and state law. At the federal level, the DMCA safe harbor provisions. Your state may provide additional protections.

You should consult with a local attorney who handles these cases. Many offer free initial consultations.

I've dealt with this before.

The biggest mistake people make in this situation is escalating to a supervisor/manager. I'd recommend following the formal complaint procedure instead.
