$3,400 ER bill from 2024. insurance paid most. they sent the residual to collections without ever calling me. just got a "validation notice" from the collector. credit took a 60-point hit. how do i fight this?

request validation in writing within 30 days. forces them to provide chain of ownership and original bill. half the time the documentation is incomplete and the debt gets removed.

also: medical debt under $500 is no longer reportable to credit bureaus as of 2023 changes. and unpaid medical debts can't be reported until 1 year past the due date.

also: dispute the bill itself with the original provider. ask for an itemized statement. surprise medical billing protections (No Surprises Act) may apply if it was an out-of-network provider at an in-network facility.

negotiate. medical debt collectors will often settle for 30-50% of face value. get any settlement IN WRITING and pay only after they agree to remove the credit reporting tradeline ("pay for delete").
