Coffee Subscription Provisions I Check First

Coffee subscriptions promise fresh beans, but the terms often contain surprising restrictions on modifications, pauses, and what "fresh" actually means.

Roast Date Freshness Guarantees

Medium Risk

Many subscriptions don't guarantee when coffee was roasted. "Fresh" may mean sitting in a warehouse for weeks. Look for specific roast-to-ship timeframes.

Look for: "Coffee is roasted within [X days] of shipping" or vague "freshly roasted" without specifics. Premium services guarantee same-day or next-day roasting.

Modification Cutoff Deadlines

High Risk

Want to change your grind, roast level, or quantity? Some services require 5-7 days notice. Miss the window and you're stuck with what you ordered last time.

Look for: "Changes must be made [X] days before your billing date. Orders processed after the cutoff cannot be modified."

Pause & Skip Limitations

High Risk

Going on vacation? Some services limit pauses to once every 90 days, cap skip duration, or automatically resume after a set period without notice.

Look for: "Subscriptions may be paused for a maximum of [X] days. After [X] skips, subscription will automatically resume."

Single-Origin & Sourcing Claims

Medium Risk

"Single-origin" definitions vary wildly. Some mean one farm, others mean one country. Blends may be substituted if a source becomes unavailable.

Look for: "Single-origin refers to beans from [country/region]. We reserve the right to substitute comparable origins based on availability."

Gift Subscription Auto-Conversion

High Risk

Gift subscriptions often convert to paid subscriptions with the recipient's payment info. The gifter may be charged if the recipient doesn't cancel in time.

Look for: "Gift subscriptions automatically convert to regular subscriptions after the gift period. [Recipient/Gifter] will be charged unless cancelled."

Grind Preference Lock-In

Medium Risk

Bought a new grinder? Some services won't let you switch from ground to whole bean mid-cycle. You may need to cancel and resubscribe to change grind settings.

Look for: "Grind preferences are set at subscription start. To change grind type, cancel current subscription and create new subscription."
