Credit Repair Provisions I Check First

The Credit Repair Organizations Act prohibits certain practices. Know what's legal before signing up.

Upfront Fees (Illegal)

High Risk

Under federal law, credit repair companies cannot charge fees before services are fully performed. Charging before work is done is illegal.

Red flag: Any fee charged before disputes are actually sent.

Guaranteed Results (False)

High Risk

No one can guarantee to remove accurate negative items. Promises to "delete" valid debts or raise scores by specific points are deceptive.

Red flag: "Guaranteed to remove" or "increase score by 100 points."

No Cancellation Rights

High Risk

Federal law gives you 3 days to cancel without penalty. Any contract that waives this right is illegal.

Required: Must include 3-day cancellation notice in contract.

Advising Illegal Actions

High Risk

Creating a "new credit identity" with a CPN (Credit Privacy Number) or EIN is federal fraud. Legitimate services never suggest this.

Red flag: Mentions of CPN, EIN for credit, or "new credit file."

Ongoing Monthly Fees

Medium Risk

Monthly subscription model can cost $100+/month for work you could do free yourself. Total cost can reach $1,000+ over time.

Look for: Monthly fee structure and minimum commitment period.

Limited Scope of Service

Medium Risk

Many only dispute items—the same free process you can do yourself. They can't remove accurate information, only errors.

Look for: What the service actually does and what it excludes.
