scammed via zelle for $4,200 — bank says I authorized it

got a call last week from "wells fargo fraud department." they walked me through "transferring my money to a safe account" via zelle. lost $4,200 to a fake person who immediately withdrew. wells fargo says they "can't help" because i "authorized" the transfer even though i was tricked.

this is exactly the scam regulators have been talking about, right? what are my options?

this is the "authorized push payment fraud" wave. CFPB has been pushing banks to make consumers whole. file CFPB complaint immediately. also file with state AG. local police report number too.

banks have started reversing some of these as PR/regulatory pressure builds. don't give up.

also: in 2024 zelle/early warning systems started reimbursing for impostor scams (fake bank reps, IRS, etc). escalate to the highest level at wells fargo's fraud team. don't accept the first no.

I'm Sergei Tokmakov, California attorney (Bar #279869). Zelle/APP fraud is a hot regulatory topic. The CFPB has aggressively pushed banks to extend Reg E protections to authorized-but-induced transfers, and many banks (including Wells Fargo) have updated policies in 2024-2025 to reimburse impersonation scams.

Practical sequence: (1) police report, (2) escalate at the bank to a fraud manager, (3) CFPB complaint with full timeline and the bank's denial reasoning, (4) state AG complaint, (5) if still denied, demand letter citing the bank's own updated impostor scam policy. Many cases get reversed at step (3) once CFPB engages. Informational only.
