I'm in a difficult situation and trying to figure out my next steps.

auto-renewal trapped me in 3-year deal. I've been dealing with this for about 8 weeks now and the situation isn't improving.

The contract was signed 4 months ago. I have a copy of the original agreement. The total amount in dispute is approximately $34,000.

Has anyone been through something similar? What worked for you?

This happened to me too. Have you tried filing a complaint with the relevant agency? In my case they investigated and it got resolved without needing a lawyer.

Not a lawyer, but I have direct experience with this.

I demanded to talk to a manager and suddenly they could help/manager. It took 1-3 months but was worth it.

Been there. Here's what I learned.

I ended up escalating to a supervisor/manager, which cost about $1-3 but saved me a lot more in the long run.

Just want to point out — the statute of limitations might be a factor here. In some states it's as short as 1-2 years. Don't sit on this too long.

California's ARL (Automatic Renewal Law) is one of the strongest in the country. Key requirements: (1) auto-renewal terms must be presented 'clearly and conspicuously' before the consumer consents, (2) the consumer must affirmatively consent to the terms, (3) the business must provide an acknowledgment that includes the auto-renewal terms and a cancellation mechanism. If any of these requirements weren't met, the auto-renewal is voidable. Many SaaS companies violate the ARL because their terms were drafted for a national audience without California-specific compliance. Federal cases have also been filed under the Restore Online Shoppers' Confidence Act (ROSCA). Challenge the renewal — you have a strong argument.

Non-compete agreements are increasingly unenforceable. California bans them entirely. The FTC proposed a nationwide ban (though it's been challenged). Check your state's specific rules before assuming you're bound.

The merger/integration clause is the most dangerous clause in any contract. It says the written contract is the ENTIRE agreement, wiping out any verbal promises. Always get verbal agreements in writing before signing.

Get everything in writing going forward. Verbal agreements are hard to enforce.

This is exactly why I started documenting everything from day one.
