Quick background on my situation — any input appreciated.

Stripe holding $15K for 90 days. I've been dealing with this for about 8 weeks now and the situation isn't improving.

The amount being held/disputed is approximately $42,114. I have tried contacting their legal department 6 times with no resolution.

What are the risks if I pursue this? What's the likely timeline?

If you can swing it, a consultation is probably your best next move here fwiw.

This happened to me too. Have you tried filing a complaint with the relevant agency? In my case they investigated and it got resolved without needing a lawyer.

Honestly, you could try handling it yourself but honestly a lawyer speeds things up 10x.

Went through something like this -- ended up getting a lawyer involved which made all the difference.

Same situation. Stripe held $23K for 120 days — no chargebacks, no complaints, 2-year account history. Their 'risk team' gave vague explanations about 'elevated risk indicators.' I eventually got the funds by filing a CFPB complaint and simultaneously having my attorney send a demand letter citing California Financial Code provisions. The CFPB complaint seemed to be what moved things — response came within 10 days. If you're stuck in Stripe's reserve hold, file with the CFPB immediately.

The Stripe fund-hold pattern is one of the most common complaints we see. A few things to understand: (1) Stripe's Terms of Service give them broad discretion to hold funds — this is legal under their payment facilitator model. (2) However, they must comply with state money transmission laws, which often require specific timelines for releasing funds. (3) The CFPB complaint route works because Stripe (as a registered money services business) is obligated to respond. (4) For amounts over $25K, consider filing in small claims (CA limit is $12,500) or limited civil ($25K).
