I'm dealing with a situation in Massachusetts and need some guidance.

noise complaint retaliation by landlord. I've been dealing with this for about 7 weeks now and the situation isn't improving.

I have been in this property for 4 years. My monthly rent is $3,317. I have a written lease.

Has anyone been through something similar? What worked for you?

Just want to point out — the statute of limitations might be a factor here. In some states it's as short as 1-2 years. Don't sit on this too long.

I practice in this area. Here's my take on the legal issues.

The legal framework here involves both federal and state law. At the federal level, your state's security deposit statute. Your state may provide additional protections.

Before taking legal action, consider sending a formal demand letter. In many cases, this alone resolves the issue.

I've dealt with this before.

Don't make the same mistake I did -- is filing with the appropriate government agency. I'd recommend gathering evidence first instead.

Security deposit disputes are often worth pursuing even for small amounts because many states award 2-3x the deposit as penalties if the landlord acted in bad faith. Plus attorney's fees in some states.
