Registered Agent Service — Do I Really Need One or Can I Use My Home Address?

Just formed a single-member LLC in Wyoming for my online business. I used my home address as the registered agent because I didn't want to pay $125/year for a service. Now I'm getting marketing spam from "business services" companies at my home address. Is this normal? Should I switch?

Completely normal. When you file your LLC with the state, your registered agent address becomes public record. Data aggregators scrape state databases and sell the info.

More concerning: your home address is now associated with your business in public databases. If you value privacy, a registered agent service is worth the cost.

I use Northwest Registered Agent ($125/year). They scan all documents and upload them to a dashboard. Worth every penny for the privacy alone.

How do I switch? Do I need to file something with Wyoming?

Yes, file a Change of Registered Agent form with the Wyoming Secretary of State. Simple one-page form with a small filing fee ($50 in WY). Most RA services handle the filing as part of onboarding.

Pro tip: if you have LLCs in multiple states, most RA services offer multi-state discounts. I have entities in DE, TX, and WY — CSC charges me $200/year total for all three.

I tried being my own RA for my rental LLCs. First time I missed a service of process because I was on vacation, it cost me $3,000 in default judgment fees. Never again.

Update: Switched to Northwest Registered Agent. They filed the change with Wyoming for me. Already getting scanned mail in the dashboard. Lesson learned — the $125/year is worth the privacy.
