I've been trying to resolve this on my own but I'm stuck.

vendor missed delivery deadline. I've been dealing with this for about 16 months now and the situation isn't improving.

The contract was signed 19 months ago. I have a copy of the original agreement. The total amount in dispute is approximately $41,000.

Should I hire a lawyer for this or try to handle it myself?

I practice in this area. Here's my take on the legal issues.

The legal framework here involves both federal and state law. At the federal level, the implied covenant of good faith. Your state may provide additional protections.

One important thing — there are strict deadlines for filing these claims. Don't wait too long.

NAL, but from what I've read, you should file a complaint. Take the above with a huge disclaimer that I'm just some person on the internet.
