Residency Pathway Overview
Portugal offers one of Europe's most straightforward paths to citizenship. After 5 years of legal residency, you can apply for naturalization and obtain an EU passport.
Year 0: Visa Application
Apply for D7, Digital Nomad, or other long-term visa at Portuguese consulate. Enter Portugal and register with AIMA.
Year 1-2: Initial Residence Permit
First residence permit valid for 2 years. Must maintain physical presence in Portugal.
Year 3-5: Renewed Residence Permit
Renewal for 3 additional years. Continue meeting visa requirements and physical presence.
Year 5: Permanent Residency or Citizenship
Eligible for permanent residence (no renewal needed) or full citizenship with Portuguese passport.
Temporary Residency
Initial residence permits are "temporary" but renewable. They grant full rights to live and work in Portugal.
First Permit (2 Years)
- Issued after entering Portugal on a D-type visa
- Must schedule AIMA appointment within 3 working days of entry (in practice, backlogs exist)
- Biometric card issued as proof of residency
- Valid for 2 years from date of issue
Renewal (3 Years)
- Apply 30-60 days before expiration
- Second permit valid for 3 years
- Must continue meeting original visa requirements
- Physical presence requirements apply
As of 2024-2025, AIMA (formerly SEF) has significant processing backlogs. Initial appointments can take 6-12+ months. Plan accordingly and keep all receipts as proof of legal status while waiting.
Physical Presence Requirements
To maintain residency, you must demonstrate actual residence in Portugal. The rules differ by visa type:

- Much more flexible than other visa types
š” Tax Residency: Physical presence also affects tax residency. Spending 183+ days in Portugal makes you a tax resident, which has implications for worldwide income reporting.
